Abstract

Peru is one of the centers of biodiversity of native chili peppers and similar (Capsicum spp.). This diversity has not been commercially exploited, and many varieties are in danger of extinction. The bio-commercialization of Capsicum as high-value differentiated products could favor its conservation. This study identified bio-commercialization opportunities for Capsicum, mainly through the implementation of a survey with 205 households in “Modern Lima” (middle and upper class in Lima). The results suggest that: (a) only four varieties are commercially positioned in the market; (b) households show preference for yellow and red Capsicum, with middle and high degree of hotness, while nutritional characteristics and size are not relatively important; (c) organic and fair-trade certifications are important market niches; and (d) households have not shown high interest for denomination of origin for this type of product in particular. This case study illustrates that biodiversity conservation can be promoted for native chili peppers and other native varieties through their bio-commercialization in Peru and other countries with high biodiversity.
