Environmental Practices and their Relations with Competitiveness and Sustainability: a case study on agri-business

Abstract

The present paper aim to verify the environmental practices on an alcohol distillery of Paraíba State and their relations with competitiveness and sustainability of the municipality where the company is located. Through an exploratory and descriptive research, a case study was conducted in a sugarcane company. Primary data were obtained from interviews with many social actors. The environmental practices presented an opportunistic strategic positioning; the competitiveness was moderate and the sustainability showed a warning level. The results indicate that the relations between variables occur indirectly and it is necessary a management model with greater conformity with interests and needs of stakeholders, mainly those with stronger links to their location.
