Abstract

The objective of this study is to identify the existence of sustainable procedures in the pulp and paper production chain in the South of Maranhão. The pulp industry has shown great growth in the last decades in Brazil with the advance of the eucalyptus monoculture in extensive areas of the national territory, among them the region of the South of Maranhão by its socioeconomic profile of great dynamism. The methodology used was exploratory and descriptive research, having as data collection the bibliographic survey based on previously published materials on the subject. Aspects of the production chain will be explained at the outset and sustainable initiatives will follow. It is concluded that there is an effort on the part of the pulp and paper industry in controlling the damages to the environment through the financing of researches and social projects that promote the regional development.
