Social representations of professional training teachers on public tourism management in Barreirinhas/MA
Abstract
This article addresses the public management of tourism investigating the social representations of teachers who work in technical education. Tourism activities play an important role in the local economy of the Brazilian municipality of Barreirinhas, in the state of Maranhão. This paper examines how teachers represent the public governance of tourism. This article is an excerpt from broader research, with a qualitative, descriptive, and exploratory approach. Our results suggest that, for teachers, public management of tourism is inefficient and this has harmed tourism in the Lençóis Maranhenses region. In addition, the researched group identifies the need for a better distribution of income from tourism activities among the local community. They also perceive the State's omission as the cause of issues relating to the municipality's infrastructure.
